This is the second article in the series on building and maintaining a strong, burning desire to grow spiritually. If you haven’t already read the previous article, I suggest you do so to fully understand the nature of a strong, burning desire. There are several reasons why we need a strong, burning desire to grow spiritually. In this article, I discuss 6 reasons why we need a strong, burning desire to grow spiritually.
1. Too many things compete for our attention.
From the time we wake up in the morning, to the time we go to bed at night, there are distractions all around us. There is no telling what we may wake up to or what may happen during the day. Unless we have a strong, burning desire to grow spiritually, we would lose our focus and spend time and energy on everything else except our spirituality.
2. We are engaged in spiritual warfare.
As we journey through life, we face many challenges, including spiritual warfare. This should be no surprise to Christians. As the Apostle Paul reminded us, our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but rather, against principalities, powers, the rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12). Although there is much good in this world, there is also a lot of evil. By focusing on spiritual growth, we learn and are better prepared to handle spiritual warfare.
3. To become wiser, stronger, and better.
When we focus on spiritual growth, we become wiser, stronger, and better. Spiritual growth is very important because our spirituality influences our thoughts, words, and deeds. God expects us to grow spiritually and if you want to make more progress in life, focus more on your spiritual growth.
4. To gain victory we need a strong, burning desire to grow spiritually.
Unless you build and maintain a strong, burning desire to grow spiritually, it may not happen and you will be defeated. You need to learn about and put on the whole armor of God. You need to learn how to overcome challenges and use what you learn so you can be more victorious. Even Jesus resorted to Scripture when he was tempted by the devil.
5. To strengthen our faith.
Faith plays a very important role in the Christian life. “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). When we focus on spiritual growth, we strengthen our faith and remain faithful to our God.
6. To follow God’s plans for our lives.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart’” (Jeremiah 29:11-13). When we have a strong, burning desire to grow spiritually we will seek God with all our heart, know more about his plans for us, and follow them.
