Christianity is the largest religion in the world, with an estimated 31% of the world’s 7.3 billion people as at 2015. This is just over 2.26 billion people, according to a report published by the Pew Research Center on April 5, 2017. Yet, there are many people who ask who or what is a Christian. This article will enlighten you.
A Christian is someone who has accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, has faith in him, and follows his teachings. The word “Christian” appear three times in the Bible:
1) Acts 11:26 – “So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”
2) Acts 26:28 – “Then Agrippa said to Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.’”
3) 1 Peter 4:16 – “However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.”
The word “Christians” in the Bible referred to Jesus’s disciples. A disciple is someone who accepts the teachings of another person and spreads his or her doctrines, just like the disciples Jesus chose plus all the others, including Barnabas and Saul, later named Paul.
Jesus came that we may have life and have it to the full (John 10:10). Not just a full life on earth, but for those who believe in him – everlasting life (John 3:16). He came to teach us how to live, did many miracles while on earth, and he died for our sins (Rom. 5:8).
We have all sinned at some point in our lives. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 6:23). Through his death on the cross, Jesus saved us by paying the penalty for our sins. Yet, he resurrected from the grave, ascended into heaven and lives forevermore. “He is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them” (Heb. 7:25), and this includes you.
Now that you know what is a Christian, if you accept Jesus as your Savior and follow his teachings, you too can become a Christian and have eternal life. If you want to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, you can talk with him your own words, or say the short prayer below with sincerity.
Dear Jesus, I believe you are the dear, beloved Son of God who came to this earth to teach us how to live and help us to have eternal life. I believe you paid the wages for my sins when you died on the cross, and I thank you. I accept you as my Savior. Please help me not to sin again. Let me live more consciously and lovingly with you, Almighty God, the Holy Spirit and all your people. Make me fully yours, and take my life and use it for your glory. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Amen.
